Fifteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time

Excerpted from Catholic Culture's article for today:

One way to express love for one's neighbor is to perform the "works of mercy," [snip] seven spiritual and seven corporal. The spiritual are: To convert the sinner; To instruct the ignorant; To counsel the doubtful; To comfort the sorrowful; To bear wrongs patiently; To forgive injuries; To pray for the living and the dead. The corporal works are: To feed the hungry; To give drink to the thirsty; To clothe the naked; To shelter the homeless; To visit the sick; To visit the imprisoned; To bury the dead.

An easy way to memorize these is to buy the CD 24 Catholic Songs for Children. The singing is old-fashioned, but it gets played so much around here that you end up memorizing the words even without meaning to. It's Schoolhouse Rock for Catholic children (and parents too!) :D .

July 14: Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha

Born in the 17th century, Kateri Tekakwitha was baptized into the Catholic faith at age 20. She was from the Mohawk Indian Tribe who lived in the lands of North America even before Columbus came. "She was a contemplative, a soul enraptured by God even in hostile lands."(1) She was ostracized when she converted to Christianity and endured much cruelty and threats, even from her own kinsmen. Kateri made a vow of perpetual virginity and devoted her life to prayer and caring for the sick. She is often referred to as the "Lily of the Mohawks. She died a holy death at 24, in a Jesuit mission village near Montreal. She was beatified in 1980 by Pope John Paul II and is one miracle away from sainthood.

Prayer:

O God, who among the many marvels of Your Grace in the New World, did cause to blossom on the banks of the Mohawk and of the St. Lawrence, the pure and tender Lily, Kateri Tekakwitha, grant, we beseech You, the favor we beg through her intercession; that this young lover of Jesus and of His Cross may soon be counted among her saints by Holy Mother Church, and that our hearts may be enkindled with a stronger desire to imitate her innocence and faith. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen. (2)
